The Buffalo Sabres-Washington Capitals game will be on NHL Network in the early afternoon while the Minnesota Wild-St. Louis Blues contest will be on NBC Sports on Sunday night.

NHL Betting: Sunday Picks

Here’s a look at our daily Hockey picks for Sunday:

Record: 18-17 (+108)

New York Islanders at Winnipeg Jets

In what might seem like an odd play, I’m going to take the New York Islanders on the road on Sunday. Most people might think betting the Islanders in any situation – particularly on the road – is craziness but they seem to have Winnipeg’s number. The Isles won the two meetings in Winnipeg last season and are offering good value for Sunday.

The key here is that the Jets got back on track with wins on Tuesday and Friday thanks to their power play. Of the eight goals they scored in those games, four came on the power play. However, the Isles have killed off every shorthanded situation (13) they’ve faced this season and if they can keep the Jets from scoring with the man-advantage, they should have a good shot to win the game.

Evgeni Nabokov should be back in net for the Isles and he has been impressive so far this season with a 1.58 GAA. He has also won five straight against the Jets franchise.

NHL Picks: Islanders +130

Philadelphia Flyers at Tampa Bay Lightning

The Philadelphia Flyers have gotten back on track recently as they have notched wins in each of their last two games. Their 7-1 win over Florida on Saturday was particularly encouraging because the real problem with the Flyers so far has been offense. Strange as that may sound, the Flyers had scored just five goals in their first four games before exploding for seven goals on Saturday.

I look for that win to really get them going. A number of quality teams have had slow starts to the season (Canucks, Rangers) and it’s nothing to panic about.

The Flyers should have a good chance to keep their offense rolling on Sundays as they face the Lightning, who have still not solved their goaltending woes. Anders Lindback was supposed to help but at least three goals in every outing while giving up a total of 11 in three starts. If he’s in net, I like both Philadelphia and the over. This should be a high-scoring affair.

On the side, I like the Flyers here for this free pick. At +120, it seems like reasonable value to take a shot with them.

NHL Picks: Flyers +120

Detroit Red Wings at Chicago Blackhawks

A lot of people seem to feel that the Detroit Red Wings are down and out, but I’m not entirely certain. It’s possible but I think we’ll know more on Sunday. A number of quality teams have been sluggish to start the season – including Detroit – but the Red Wings can get right back on track with a win.

There’s no question that the Chicago Blackhawks have looked awesome to start the season as they’ve won all of their games. But when you look at their recent wins, their last three have been by razor-thin 3-2 margins.

The main reason that Detroit is worth a bet in this spot is because the Blackhawks will be playing their third game in four nights on Sunday in their third city. They went from Dallas, to Columbus and now back home – all since Thursday. If Detroit plays with a steady effort, they can definitely win this game.

The Blackhawks deserve to be the NHL odds favorites in this game but at +130, I’m perfectly fine taking a shot with the Red Wings.
