After a fun-filled Saturday night that was stocked with 13 NHL games, we’ve got a quiet Sunday with just three games in total for our hockey picks.

We’ve separated the New Jersey Devils-Minnesota Wild preview into its own article and below we’re examining the other two games on the schedule.

Dallas Stars @ Ottawa Senators

The Ottawa Senators are both 0-3-1 in their last four at home and overall. Clearly, it’s been a rough start to the season for a team that was supposed to be up-and-coming in the Eastern Conference after last year’s surprise. On Sunday, they’ll get a visit from the Dallas Stars, who have been a pretty bad road bet this season. They’ve lost five of six away games, which means that they haven’t been a good investment for your sports picks when they’ve been away from home.

Making matters more challenging for handicapping these NHL odds is the fact that Ottawa has been an over team this season, allowing 43 goals so far (second-most in the East). However, Dallas’ 33 goals scored are the second-fewest in the Western Conference

I’ll still take a shot with the over in this spot. Although Dallas doesn’t score a whole lot in their road games (2.43 goals per game), their defense has not been as good as it has been at home. Their 3.57 goal-against average on the road is tied for the third-worst in the NHL. Combined with Ottawa’s home GAA (3.20), which is also third-worst, we’re probably looking at an over here. Go over the number with the NHL odds and expect a high-scoring affair in this spot.

Calgary Flames @ Chicago Blackhawks

The experts who make their NHL picks expected the Calgary Flames to be a bad team this season but a 3-0-2 shooed those negative clouds. However, the Flames have been a completely different team since that point and it’s hard to back them in any situation right now.

The Flames have lost six of their last eight games and have looked more like the team we expected them to be. The biggest issue is goaltending as Joey MacDonald reverted to his former self after a good start and the Flames waived him. Part of that decision was his foolish comments after the team’s latest loss to Detroit when he called out his teammates. Regardless, it leaves the Flames with Karri Ramo in net and he’s been a disaster too. Ramo has a 3.49 GAA and an .888 save percentage. That’s pathetic and the Flames might be better off pulling their goalie and playing with a sixth-skater.

The Flames are on the road in Chicago on Sunday and there’s no way you can conceivably bet them right now. That means you can either take the Blackhawks – or lay the puck line, in my case, as I won’t lay that type of juice – or take the over. I’ll stick with the over as it’s cashed five straight times in Blackhawks’ games
