Our NHL picks expert examines today’s game between the Islanders/Kings. If you’re undecided on what way to go in this game, then this is a must read NHL betting preview article.

NHL Battle of East Coast versus West Coast
The Kings will host the Islanders tonight at the Staples Center in Los Angeles with the opening puck drop slated for 10:35 PM ET. According to the NHL odds at SBR Sportsbook, the Kings are a -185 money line favorite, and the posted total is 5.5. The Kings won each of their two meetings versus the Islanders last season, and both games stayed under the total. The probable listed starting goaltenders in this game are Jaroslav Halak for the Islanders, and Jonathan Quick for the Kings.

Western Road Trip Continues for the Isles
Tonight will be the 4th of a 5-game in 10-day western road swing for the Islanders. They’re coming off a much needed 3-2 win last night over the Anaheim Ducks, and that enabled them to snap a 3-game losing streak. The good news is that the power play is converting on a stellar 23.5% of their opportunities. The bad news is that the Islanders penalty killing has been atrocious. Opponents have cashed in on an extremely high 36.1% of their power play chances against them.

Kings of their Home
The Kings return home for the first time following a forgetful 5-game in 8 day road trip that saw them go a dismal 1-4. They did manage to conclude the trip by snapping a 4-game losing streak with a 3-1 win over the Dallas Stars. On a more positive note for the defending Western Conference and Stanley Cup champions, they’ve won 6 straight at the Staples Center since losing their home opener to the San Jose Sharks.

Final Analysis
This will be the first time this season that the Kings have seen a total of 5.5. Each of their first 13-games had a posted total of 5.0. They’ve gone over the total in just 3 of those 13-games, and in just 1 of the 6 played at home.

Contrarily to the Kings, the Islanders first 12-games have all seen a total of 5.5 or more. The Islanders have also seen each of their first 3-games on this current road trip stay under the total. After starting the season by scoring 19-goals in their first 4-games, the offensive production has slowed considerably. They have scored 20-golas over the last 7-games. However, over one third of those goals were scored during a 7-5 win over Dallas on 10/25.

I’m going to call for this one to stay on the low side of the number, and that will be my lean for one of my NHL picks today.
