The Detroit Red Wings host the Ottawa Senators at the Joe Louis Arena this Wednesday night. Find out where we believe the best value lies for our NHL Picks tonight.

According to current NHL betting odds Detroit is a -145 money line home favorite and the posted total is 5.5. Detroit has won the last 4-games between these two clubs. The series has seen 5 of the last 7 meetings go under the total.

Inconsistent to Start the Year

Ottawa has been up and down to start the season so far. After beginning the year with a 1-0 win at Buffalo, they proceeded to drop their next 4-games. They followed that with a 2-game win streak that was subsequently ended on Saturday in a 3-1 home loss to Edmonton. The expectations are high this season after making the playoffs a season ago, then following that up by upsetting Montreal in the Eastern Conference quarterfinals. However, this is still a very young team, and more growing pains along the way aren’t enough to sound the panic alarm. The biggest concern at the moment is the fact they’re allowing a NHL worst 39.4 shots on goal against per game. That type of pace will be the easiest way to wear down goaltenders Craig Anderson and Robin Lehner. Anderson comes off a terrific season a year ago, and despite a lofty 2.88 GAA this year, he’s posted a very good .924 save percentage.  Backup Robin Lehner has been solid in 2 starts with a .940 save percentage.

Toss the Octopus More Please

The Red Wings are off to a decent 6-4 start to the season. However, their fans would like to be throwing some Octopus on the ice following a Red Wings goal more frequently. Detroit is currently 20th in the NHL averaging just 2.4 goals per game. The good news is that the goaltending tandem of Jimmy Howard and Jonas Gustavvson has been outstanding. Gustavvson in particular has been a pleasant surprise in going 3-0 so far with a 1.67 GAA, and an excellent .953 save percentage. You can’t blame the Red Wings line of Pavel Datsyuk, Henrik Zetterberg, and Daniel Alfredson for the lack of offensive production. Those three players have accounted for a combined 12-goals, 19-assists, and 31-points through the first 10-games. The rest of the Detroit roster has accounted for just 32-points this season. Detroit has gone over the total in just 12 of their last 41 home games.

Final Analysis

The Red Wins have had a grueling schedule of late, and this will be their 8th game in the last 14 days. Contrarily the Senators have played 2 less games over that identical 14-day stretch. For my NHL picks I have the smallest of leans on the road underdog this evening.
