The Battle of Ontario is set for Round 3 as the Ottawa Senators will make the visit to Toronto this time. What numbers are the odds makers offering us, and where are we looking to place our picks?

So far, these rivals have squared off twice with the home team winning each time. While the two teams are tied in the standings, the Maple Leafs are a sizable favorite on the NHL odds for Wednesday’s affair.

Record: 70-82 (-942)

The Ottawa Senators can win because…

Their defense and goaltending have been stellar. Early projections for the starting goalies indicates that Ben Bishop is slated to be in net and he’s got a GAA of just 2.15 with a save percentage of .938. He hasn’t allowed more than two goals in any of his last six starts and he’s only done that once this season.

Ottawa isn’t doing much scoring these days but at least their defense and goaltending is keeping them in it. The same should be the case on Wednesday as they’ve allowed just five goals in two meetings with Toronto this season.

The Toronto Maple Leafs can win because…

The Sens just can’t find the back of the net these days. Ottawa enters on a three-game losing streak and they haven’t scored more than two goals in any of those games. When you start to examine the numbers, you’ll notice that Ottawa has scored just 52 goals this season and has averaged the fewest goals per game in the East.

Toronto has given up just three goals to Ottawa in two contests this season and should have a good chance to keep them under wraps on Wednesday. Toronto has won three of four and 10 of 14. Those trends should continue against the bumbling Senators.

Outlook & Pick

I like Toronto in this game, but I still can’t bring myself to trust them as a -150 home favorite. At -120? Probably. At -150? That’s a little rich for my blood.

Instead, I’ll add the under to my NHL picks tonight. The total is five and we’re getting plus-money in what should be a low-scoring affair.
