The Anaheim Ducks were flattened in their season-opener 6-1 by the Colorado Avalanche but they’ve righted the ship since then. Let's review the betting odds for their game today.

They’ve won three straight and have allowed just five goals in those three games combined. On top of that, the Avalanche have been the best team in the NHL so far this season, so that opening loss doesn’t look so bad now.

On Sunday, the Ducks will visit the Ottawa Senators, who haven’t been that impressive this season. We’ll see if the Ducks can keep momentum on their side.

Record: 15-29 (-1069)

The Ottawa Senators can win because…

They’ve been close in each of their recent losses. While the record shows just one win and three losses, when you take a closer look, you’ll notice that each of the Senators three losses have come by exactly one goal (two of them in overtime). It’s not as if they are getting blown out.

Anaheim’s three wins have come against the Winnipeg Jets, Minnesota Wild and the New York Rangers. Each of those teams have had their fair share of struggles to start the year. The Sens are as good – if not better – than those teams,  so expect them to put up a fight on Sunday.

The Anaheim Ducks can win because…

Ottawa has been sinking. Since starting their season with a 1-0 win in Buffalo, who is arguably the worst team in the NHL, the Senators have dropped three straight. What’s worse is that they’ve been allowing quite a few goals (12 in their last three) and they simply don’t have the offense to make up for that. Experts who make sports picks know that the Sens allowed the fewest goals in the NHL last season. That’s their bread and butter. Until they can cut that down, they are going to continue losing.

The challenge for Ottawa on Sunday is that Anaheim isn’t allowing many goals these days. They’ve given up just five in their last three games and are fresh off of a 6-0 shutout of the New York Rangers. They should be able to take care of the stumbling Senators.

Outlook & Pick

The Ducks are laying -150 on the NHL odds in this contest and that seems like a fair price. They are playing better than Ottawa right now, they are at home and the Sens are in a back-to-back on the road situation after losing in San Jose on Saturday night.

While laying the juice does make sense in many ways as the Sens have a quick turnaround and are an east coast team traveling out west, I’ll instead go with the under. I expect the Sens goaltending and defense to be better than what we’ve seen so far and Anaheim’s defense seems to be much stronger when they play at home. That being the case, I’ll add the under to my NHL picks and expect a low-scoring affair in this matchup.
