It’s a big day for favorites on Saturday. Taking a look at the card at SportsInteraction, there are six teams that feature favorites of -185 or more. Let’s see if we can find some value NHL picks on the board.

Ottawa Senators vs. Toronto Maple Leafs

Although you might not think it, the Ottawa Senators and Toronto Maple Leafs have been two of the highest-scoring teams in the NHL this season. Both teams have averaged 3.00 goals per game or better in January.

I’m going to take the over with my sports picks here because while both offenses have been showing up for both sides, the defense has been option. The Senators have given up 13 goals in their last four and that includes a shut out while the Leafs have allowed 3.67 goals per game in January, which is the most in the NHL.

These two teams have squared off twice this season and we’ve seen at least seven goals in each meeting. That being the case, I’ll take the over – even though the NHL odds reflect a high total of six for this contest.

Pick: Over 6 at Bookmaker

Pittsburgh Penguins vs. Phoenix Coyotes

I have no interest in betting the Phoenix Coyotes these days. Case and point: they are fresh off a home loss to the Buffalo Sabres. If they can lose to Buffalo at home (the Sabres are the worst team in the NHL), they can lose to pretty much anyone at any time. On Saturday, the Pittsburgh Penguins visit and the Pens are the best team in the East. Looking at the streaks, they’ve won nine of 12 while the Coyotes have dropped 17 of their last 23.

The Pens have played well in non-conference games this season as they’ve gone 11 of 15 against the Western Conference. They also love to beat up on the league’s weaklings having taken 23 of 33 against teams below .500.

The main difference in this one is the offenses as the Pens averaged 3.58 goals per game in January (second in the NHL) while the Coyotes only managed 2.40 (23rd).

Pittsburgh should have some added motivation in this one as a number of the players’ moms will be in the audience. They’re with them for the two-game road trip and it managed to motivate them in the first stop with a 4-1 win in LA. I’ll take them here with my NHL picks since I don’t have to lay that much juice.

Minnesota Wild vs. Calgary Flames

The Calgary Flames have been streaking and are worth a look on Saturday night. They’ve won four straight and have been playing fantastic hockey of late.

The stats don’t really look all that pretty for the Flames as they’ve been one of the worst teams in the NHL this season. However, going strictly on momentum and the fact that I’m only laying -102, I’m happy to take a flier on them.

The Wild are not a good road team as they are 10-18 away from home and 10-16 in road games when the total is 5.5. They also don’t play well in Calgary as the Flames have taken 24 of the last 35 meetings they’ve hosted.

Pick: Flames -102 at Pinnacle
