It’s a busy day for sports fans on Saturday as college basketball is back, the NBA is in full swing, college football is in the middle of their November races and the NHL is busy as usual.
New York Islanders @ Columbus Blue Jackets
The Columbus Blue Jackets are a sinking ship these days and for me to be expected to lay juice with them on the NHL odds is just crazy. Sure, they are playing the New York Islanders but the Isles are 3-4-0 on the road this season; that’s not awful. The Blue Jackets have lost five straight and are a pathetic 3-6-0 at home this season. While the Philadelphia Flyers and Buffalo Sabres get most of the “acclaim” for being the worst teams in the NHL, the Blue Jackets aren’t much better as they have just 10 points.
This game should be a PICK or maybe about -110 or -115 in Columbus favor. With the line offering some value on the Islanders, I’ll take a shot with them. Columbus is a straight bet-against until further notice.

Pittsburgh Penguins @ St. Louis Blues
I’m willing to add the Penguins to my NHL picks on Saturday because it’s not often that you see them in the role of the underdog. They are getting some money as they visit St. Louis in a matchup of two of the best teams in the NHL.
There are a couple of reasons why I like the Penguins. For starters, when they put their best effort forward – team-wide – they are the best team in the league. They are coming off a 5-1 loss to New York where they did the opposite of just that, so I think we’ll see them be far more focused after such a sloppy performance.
The Blues have been impressive this season (10-2-2) but most of their losses have come to elite teams (Tampa Bay, Vancouver and San Jose). Pittsburgh falls into that category, so there’s a good chance they take advantage.

Washington Capitals @ Phoenix Coyotes
The Coyotes have flown under the radar this season but when you look at the standings, they are actually tied with the same amount of points as the Blackhawks, San Jose Sharks and Colorado Avalanche. One of the reasons they’ve been so good is that they are scoring goals at a healthy rate as they’ve tallied the third-most in the NHL (56). While they are traditionally perceived as an under team, they’ve actually been playing in far more high-scoring affairs this season because their offense has improved and their defense/goaltending has tapered off just a tad. Their contests have averaged 6.4 goals per game – if you can believe that.
That’s why I’m going to take the over on Saturday night. Washington leads the East in goals scored and is playing their best hockey of the season right now. I see plenty of goals in this one.
