With only eight games on the schedule, it’s a somewhat quiet night in the NHL on Saturday. That doesn’t mean it’s a quiet night for bettors as everyone is looking to get the edge on the NHL odds regardless.

NHL Betting: Saturday Picks

Here’s a look at our daily NHL free picks:

Record: 17-14 (+308)

Colorado Avalanche at San Jose Sharks

I’m somewhat surprised to see that the Colorado-San Jose matchup has plus-money on the over as the Sharks have been lighting up the scoreboard to this point in the season. They’ve played three games so far and have scored at least four goals each time while compiling 15 overall. They have been one of the biggest surprises of the early season – as has their offense.

On Saturday, they’ll host the Avalanche in what should be a high-scoring affair. The Avs netminding has been up-and-down as they’ve stymied the low-scoring Columbus Blue Jackets and Los Angeles Kings, yet given up four goals to the Minnesota Wild.

San Jose will be scoring in this matchup and we just need a couple from the Avs to oblige. At +106, take the over.

Pick: Over 5.5 at Bovada

St. Louis Blues @ Dallas Stars

In the NHL these days, I don’t really want to be laying -125 in most cases – especially since the early part of the season has been unpredictable – but there a couple of teams that have impressed me to the point where I’m comfortable to do it. The St. Louis Blues are one of them.

The Blues are excellent on defense and that has carried over from last season. They have won three of their four games to start the year and their only loss was a one-goal shortcoming to the Chicago Blackhawks, who have also played quite well at the beginning of the season.

The Dallas Stars are not a high scoring team and their limited offense could struggle against the Blues. On top of that, the Stars did re-sign Jamie Benn this week but he won’t be back in the lineup, Jaromir Jagr is day-to-day with a back issue and starting goaltender Kari Lehtonen will get the night off on Saturday. Add it all up and I like the betting odds on the Blues in this spot.

Pick: Blues -125 at Pinnacle

Edmonton Oilers at Calgary Flames

I have spoken many times about my disdain for the Calgary Flames and how poor I view their talent-level to be at and so far, they have yet to disappoint. They’ve lost all three of their games to start the season and have allowed at least three goals every game.

On Saturday, we’ll witness the first Battle of Alberta in what should be an entertaining affair. It’s do-or-die time for Calgary as their season is quickly getting washed away. You can expect a desperate effort from them but I’m not sure that it’s going to be enough.

Edmonton comes into this game with lots of momentum after a very exciting win over the Los Angeles Kings. They look like a budding, young team as they have won two of three to start the year.

Calgary should win this game but “should” means nothing these days. With the Oil Can as an underdog that pays decent value, I’m going to take them. They’re really the better team in this contest.

Pick: Oilers +110 at Bwin
