NHL Picks: San Jose Sharks vs N.Y. Rangers

Antti Raanta celebrating in the field

We are going to cash another underdog winner tonight in the NHL as the Rangers are a generous +117 across the board. I'll tell you why this NHL pick will benefit our bankroll tonight.

2016-2017 NHL Record:   3-3   50.00%   +1.62 units

We got a furious comeback by the Vancouver Canucks last night to cash another plus money winner. Our bankroll continues to grow while we have risked very little to do so.

Quick update on betting trends overall in the NHL. Home favorites are now a blistering 23-5, 82.14%, to start the season. There are three home favorites tonight but the Pittsburgh Penguins are as high as -190 in some spots so that's not going to be an option.  The Winnipeg Jets are -115 at Bookmaker over the Boston Bruins while the Detroit Redwings are -135 at BetOnline, where you can get a 50% Free Play Bonus.

As we mentioned a few days ago, even though favorites have been dominating straight-up its the dogs that have been covering with the +1.5 (24-8 75.00%). The problem with taking the +1.5 is that you always have to lay an unacceptable premium to get the advantage. Even if you find a line that's +1.5 and under -150, my cutoff point, that generally means that you're playing a team with a huge disadvantage going in. Neither scenario is what we're looking for.

As far as 'totals' are concerned the 'overs' continue to pour in as 17 of 25 games have cashed tickets. It will be interesting to see if that trend continues as all four games tonight are shaded to the 'under'.

As far as what we're going to play tonight we head to Madison Square Garden where the Rangers have announced that Antti Raanta will start in the crease. That meant an immediate line move as the Rangers opened -115 but now are now as high as +117 at MatchBook. Normally we wouldn't play this game because I like to stay away from any change that could affect team dynamic but with four games on the board, this is the best option.

Raanta, entering his second year with New York, is a more than a capable back-up who enjoyed his best year last season.  Raanta will be making his first start along with Dylan McIIrath giving the Rangers more defensive depth which is a must needed with the loss of Kevin Klein.

Through two games it's apparent that the Rangers are a lot faster and are much more of a possession team than they were last year.  This will help any goaltender but especially one that hasn't played in almost three weeks. Even in their recent loss to the Blues the Rangers controlled the pace for much of the game. The Rangers will give us another plus money winner in our NHL picks.
