The Ottawa Senators picked up a little bit of momentum heading into the Olympic break. Can they carry it over to the other side as they host the Detroit Red Wings on Thursday night? Lets take a detailed look at the matchup before placing our NHL picks.

The Detroit Red Wings Can Win Because…

Ottawa is not a great bet at home. If you used the Sens for your sports picks each and every time they’ve been at home facing a total of 5.5, you’ve actually lost 9.4 units this season. This is a team that’s also 6-16 off a division game and just 11-14 (-6.6 units) when facing a team with a losing record.

Detroit actually plays pretty well in Ottawa as they’ve won seven of their last 11 trips here. The NHL odds should show closer to a toss-up type of a game but with the Sens being about a -140 favorite, there’s value with Detroit here.

The Ottawa Senators Can Win Because….

They were playing well before the break. They had put together a decent 11-4-4 stretch over their last 19 games and put themselves into playoff contention. Detroit is in a tight spot here as they are in a back-to-back situation after playing in Montreal on Wednesday night. They are also shorthanded – again – without the leading scorer Henrik Zetterberg, who is out for eight-to-12 weeks

Ottawa has already beaten Detroit in two of three meetings this season while scoring a healthy 12 goals in the process. Take them with your NHL picks as they should take care of business once more.

Outlook & Pick

Thursday is a very important game between the teams because the Red Wings are just ahead of Ottawa in the standings. These two squads hold the seventh and eighth playoff spots as of right now.

The price is a little too rich on Ottawa as I see this as a coin flip matchup. Ottawa has a slight edge with Detroit being in a back-to-back situation but I’ll lean under instead of taking sides.

Pick: Under 5.5 at Pinnacle
