The Winnipeg Jets host the Detroit Red Wings at the MTI Centre. Where have we decided to place our cash for tonights matchup?

According to NHL betting odds the Red Wings are a -135 money line road favorite and the total is posted at 5.5. These two clubs have seen 8 of their last 9 meetings go over the total. The last 6 times these teams have played in Winnipeg each of those games went over the total. Detroit has defeated Winnipeg in 10 of their last 14 head-to-head confrontations.

Road Warriors

The Detroit Red Wings have started the season by winning 6 of their first 8 road games. The contest tonight will mark the final one of a four-game road trip that has seen them win each of the first three. In those three wins Detroit has outscored the opposition by a combined 11-4. In their previous game on Saturday night they totally dominated Edmonton in a 5-0 win. The Red Wings had a huge territorial advantage outshooting the Oilers 31-14 for the game. Petr Mrazek a 20-year old rookie, received his first ever start in the NHL, and stopped all 14 shots on his way to a shutout. Mrazek was thrust into the role as backup to Jimmy Howard after Jonas Gustavvason went down with a neck injury that will keep him out indefinitely. Pavel Datsyuk continued his point per game pace on the season by contributing an assist in the win, and now has 15-points in as many games this season.

Ice Cold in Manitoba

It’s not yet the dead of winter in the in Winnipeg, but the Jets are ice cold having lost 7 of their last 8-games. The Jets have been anemic offensively scoring 2-goals or less in each of their last 5-games. In their previous game they were dominated at home in a 5-1 loss to the defending Stanley Cup champion Chicago Blackhawks. The Chicago loss marked the third straight defeat at home for the Jets. On a positive note 4 of the last 5 losses have all been by just 1-goal, so with the exception of their last game they’ve been very competitive in defeat.

Final Analysis

The Red Wings like to play things close to the vest regardless of the opponent. They’re especially tough when getting the lead, at which time they bunker down, and are adept at stifling the opposition. The Jets scoring drought has already been chronicled earlier in this preview and need not be repeated. Below is a solid NHL totals angle that supports my NHL pick lean toward the under in this game.

Any team coming off 3 or more road wins in a row that has a money line winning percentage of .510 to .600, versus an opponent with a less than .500 money line winning percentage on the season has seen 39 of those 52-games (75%) go under the total since the start of the 1996-1997 year.

NHL Pick: Detroit/Winnipeg to go under the total of 5.5
