NHL Picks: Red Wings vs. Ducks Game 7

The Detroit Red Wings have pushed the Anaheim Ducks to seven games. If you watched the NHL series preview with Peter Loshak and heeded the advice, you’re probably not surprised.

However, I think the majority of people are a bit perplexed that the seventh-seeded Red Wings have pushed the second-seeded Ducks to the brink.

The Detroit Red Wings can win because…

This is the exact position they wanted to be in. The Red Wings are not as talented as the Ducks. They also aren’t as deep, fast or athletic. However, they do have the edge in experience, savvy and coaching. They know that all they needed to do was hang around and put themselves in position to win.

People making their NHL picks should note that Detroit’s best players are leading the way right now as both Henrik Zetterberg and Pavel Datsyuk led the way in Game 6. Zetterberg has five points in his last two games while Datsyuk has five in the last three. If those guys lead the way again, the Red Wings will advance.

The Anaheim Ducks can win because…

Red Wings goaltender Jimmy Howard has not played well in this series. When you start to do the math, Howard has given up a total of 19 goals in six games. He’s allowed at least three in five of the six games. If Anaheim can get to three, they’re probably winning.

Detroit lives and dies by their power play, which means that if Anaheim keeps this game a five-on-five affair, the Red Wings won’t get the job done. The Red Wings power play is four-of-10 in their three wins but just three-of-13 in their three losses. As long as Anaheim plays smart, they’ll move on.

Outlook & Pick

Each of the last three games in this series – and four in total – have needed overtime to decide a result. That means that Game 7 is likely a coin flip. That being the case, I’ll stick to my guns, which was a Red Wings series upset on the NHL odds.
