The Detroit Red Wings and Montreal Canadiens will get back to business on Wednesday night. Has the Olympic break drained the NHL athletes who competed? Or can they use their experience and momentum to keep moving forward?

The Red Wings are likely lamenting the Olympic break as they lost Henrik Zetterberg for eight weeks as he suited up for Sweden. As for Montreal, they’re pleased as they they watched their goaltender, Carey Price, lead team Canada to a gold medal and gain plenty of confidence.

The Detroit Red Wings Can Win Because…

Price will have a letdown. It’s hard to go from playing for a gold medal in the Winter Olympics to coming home and playing with the same intensity against Detroit. Forgive him if he doesn’t show up with the same type of effort.

The Habs haven’t been a great home team as they’ve dropped four of their last seven at the Bell Centre. Detroit’s played well on the road all year long as they are 15-9-4 when away. Home-ice advantage won’t be much of one here.

The Montreal Canadiens Can Win Because….

Price is going to be very confident. Anybody who has used the Habs for their sports picks this year knows that they go as Price goes. Right now, his confidence should be sky-high as he’s coming off what might be most successful stage of his young career.

The Habs had won three straight entering the Olympic break and they should be able to keep momentum on their side. The Red Wings have been very uneven in recent months, winning just 11 of their last 28 games. Injuries have been a big reason why and now they’ll be without Zetterberg, who is their leader in points and goals. Take the Habs with your NHL picks.

Outlook & Pick

Detroit just can’t seem to get into any rhythm this year. The switch to the Eastern Conference hasn’t helped. Neither have the injuries to Pavel Datsyuk (missed 21 games), Stephen Weiss (missed 32 games), Jimmy Howard (missed 24 games) and now Zetterberg.

The Habs should take this game but with the NHL odds being a tad high, I’ll instead go under.

Pick: Under 5.5 at Marathon
