The Detroit Red Wings travel to Boston to take on the Bruins at the TD Garden with faceoff scheduled for 1:05 PM ET. This is a rare weekday early start in accordance with the Columbus Day in the United States and Thanksgiving Day in Canada.

According to current NHL odds the Bruins are a -150 money line home favorite and the total is 5.0. This is the 2nd meeting of the season between these clubs with Boston prevailing 4-1 in the first encounter on October 5th.

Detroit Power Outage Resolved

Entering Saturday’s game versus Philadelphia, the Red Wings were the only team in the NHL who had yet to score a power play goal. That ineptness was alleviated in a big way as Detroit scored 3 power play goals in a 5-2 win. Henrik Zetterberg continued his hot start to the season contributing 2 goals and an assist to give him 6 points in the first 5 games. Pavel Datsyuk also contributed a goal and 2 assists. This marks the first of 3 games in 4 days for the Red Wings. They will host Columbus tomorrow and then travel to red-hot Colorado for a game on Thursday.

The Stingy Bruins

The Boston Bruins have been terrific defensively in their 3-1 start to the season. The Bruins have allowed just 5 goals through their first 4 games. There’s no doubt that Tuuka Rask established himself as one of the elite goaltenders in the NHL last season. His start to this season has fortified that to be true. Rask has started all 4-games posting a 1.00 GAA with an excellent .963 save percentage. After losing their first game of the season to the red-hot Colorado Avalanche on Thursday 2-0, the Bruins bounced back nicely with a 3-1 win at Columbus on Saturday. Loui Eriksson scored the winning goal 0:49 into the 3rd period, and Milan Lucic added an empty netter with 0:33 to go for the final margin of victory. After tonight the Bruins will go on a 3 game road trip starting on Thursday at Florida.

Final Analysis

Both of these clubs are outstanding defensively, and that fact alone already gives me an idea of where to look with my sports picks. Boston’s Tuuka Rask and Detroit’s Jimmy Howard are among the top goaltenders in the NHL. The Red Wings have gone over the total just 13 times in their last 51 games dating back to last season. The Bruins have gone over the total 15 times in their last 53 games. When it comes to placing my  NHL picks, I like this one to be a low scoring affair with stellar goaltending and solid defensive play being the order of the day.
