The Boston Bruins won the Presidents’ Trophy and were expected to be the favorite to win the Eastern Conference. However, they couldn’t get their offense going in Game 1 and were upset 1-0 at home by the Detroit Red Wings.

The Detroit Red Wings Can Win Because…
They played extremely disciplined hockey in Game 1. Everyone knew that for them to win this series, they would have to play virtually perfect and they did so in Game 1. They only had one penalty in the entire contest and they held the Bruins to just 25 shots on net. To those who think this is just a coincidence, remember that Detroit beat Boston three out of four times in the regular season. In their three wins, they held Boston to just five goals, so this is more of the same. The Red Wings know what they need to do to get the job done and they’re confident they can do it.

The Boston Bruins Can Win Because…
They’ll create more opportunities in Game 2. Boston played OK in Game 1 and it cost them. They won’t sleepwalk through Game 2 the same way. They are going to be even more physical and they aren’t going to allow the Red Wings to dominate the puck as much.

Boston is 21-7 when playing at home with a total of five this season. They’re also 16-8 in their last 24 against teams with a winning record. They had some rust in Game 1 but they’ll shake it off for Game 2.

Outlook & Pick
Boston probably bounces back here but I can’t lay that type of juice. Detroit has now won five of the last six meetings overall, so they seem to have the Bruins number. Instead, I’ll go under as 10 of the last 13 meetings between the teams in Boston have stayed under the number.

Pick: Under 5 at Bodog
