The Detroit Red Wings head to Nationwide Arena this Monday night in search of their first win of the season when they square-off against the Columbus Blue Jackets. The game is set to get underway at 4:30 p.m. (PT) and it will be broadcast nationally on the NBC Sports Network.

Red Wings Overview

The Red Wings kicked-off this abbreviated regular season by going out and getting hammered 6-0 in an ugly loss to St. Louis as 124-road underdogs this past Saturday. The total went OVER the five-goal line which was the first time in their last 11 games dating back to last season’s playoffs and final five games of the regular season that the total went OVER in one of their games.

The Blues jumped all over Detroit goalie Jimmy Howard with two goals in the first period and kept the pressure on all game long. They outshot the Red Wings 36 to 14 as Detroit struggled to keep the puck out of its zone from the opening face-off. This was a team that ended last season ranked seventh in the NHL in scoring, so it is to believe that it will turn in another performance like that on Monday night.

Blue Jackets Overview

Columbus finished the 2011/2012 season with the fewest amount of points in the entire league, but it is already off to a much better start with a thrilling 3-2 shootout victory over Nashville as a 156-road underdog in Saturday’s season opener. The total stayed UNDER the 5.5-point line in a game that only had a combined total of 62 shots on goal and three penalties.

Derick Brassard finally broke the 2-2 tie with a goal in the sixth round of the shootout, but much of the credit for this upset should go to the Blue Jackets’ defensive effort and Sergei Bobrovsky’s play in goal. He came up with a couple of monster saves in regulation to keep this game tight and was a virtual wall in both overtime and the ensuing shootout. This was Columbus’s first victory over Nashville since the 2010/2011 season after going 0-5-1 against the Predators last year. It will now face another Central Division foe it has only beaten twice in the last seven meetings.

Red Wings vs. Blue Jackets Betting Lines and Trends

[gameodds]7/218120/43/us[/gameodds]

The Red Wings are 3-12 in their last 15 games playing on one day’s rest and 3-13 in their last 16 games on the road. The total has stayed UNDER in 19 of their last 29 games against the Central Division.

The Blue Jackets are 4-1 in their last five home games and a perfect 4-0 in their last four games playing on one day’s rest. The total has gone OVER in four of their last five games against the division.

Head-to-head, the home team is 5-1 in the last six meetings and the total has stayed UNDER in six of the last eight games played in Columbus. Detroit is 53-19-1 in the last 73 meetings in this series.

Red Wings vs. Blue Jackets Game Prediction

It is hard to see the Red Wings play any worse than they did on Saturday, but the past trends in this series tend to favor Columbus. I believe that the total holds the best value for our NHL picks, as I look for Blue Jackets to stun Detroit in a low-scoring battle as this time it puts-up another solid defensive effort in front of the home-town fans.
