The Detroit Red Wings and Washington Capitals will wrap up their home-and-home series on Super Bowl Sunday when they square off in the NBC Game of the Week at 12:30 PM ET. The Red Wings took the first meeting by a count of 5-4 but the Capitals are a -130 favorite to earn a split.

The Detroit Red Wings Can Win Because…

The Capitals are a terrible team right now. Washington did have a fleeting two-game winning streak early in the week but those were the team’s only two wins in their last 11 games. This is a team that’s sunk in the standings big time as they’re now second-last in the Metropolitan Division and 13th in the conference overall.

It’s hard to believe that the Caps were 19-13-3 at one point this season with good prospects of making the playoffs. They’ve lost 15 of 20 since that point and simply aren’t worth the investment with your NHL picks.

The Washington Capitals Can Win Because….

Recently, the Red Wings have been abysmal on the road. They’ve been shut out in three straight road games and it’s hard to win when you can’t score. The Caps have played good defense at home of late, giving up just four non-shootout goals in their last three home games.

The Caps have had the upper hand in this series in the last few seasons, taking three of the last four get-togethers. That’s why they’re worth a play with your NHL picks.

Outlook & Pick

Pick your poison in this one: a Red Wings team that hasn’t scored in their last 182:34 on the road (more than three games) or a Capitals team that’s lost three straight and six of eight at home. It’s ugly either way.

Since both teams aren’t that impressive, I’ll take a shot with the dog. The Capitals are simply in the bigger slump.

Pick: Red Wings +120 at Pinnacle
