NHL Preview

Saturday 10/26/2013

New York Rangers (2-6) @ Detroit Red Wings (6-5)

The game will be televised live in the United States on the NHL Network. According to current NHL betting odds Detroit is a -200 money line home favorite and the posted total is 5.0. This will mark the first time in nearly 40-years they these two members of the “original six” will face each other as conference rivals. The Red Wings have won their last 7 home games versus the Rangers in addition to winning 14 of the last 17 meetings overall.

Missing the Comforts of Home

This will the 9th and final game of a grueling 9-game road trip to start the season for the Rangers. They’ve managed to go just 2-6 so far and are coming off a 2-1 loss at Philadelphia on Thursday. That game marked the NHL debut of goaltender Cameron Talbot for the Rangers. He acquitted himself nicely stopping 25 of 27 Flyers shots on goal. At the time of this writing Talbot is listed as the starter once again tonight. Regular starter Henrik Lundquist has missed practice the last few days with an undisclosed injury. The Rangers will finally play their home opener at the newly refurbished Madison Square Garden on Monday when they host the Montreal Canadians.

Anemic Offense

The Rangers are currently 28th in the NHL averaging a paltry 1.5 goals per game. Unfortunately they’re next to last in the NHL in scoring defense as well allowing 3.9 goals per contest. New York has scored more than 2-goals in a game on just one occasion thus far. That came in a 3-1 win at Los Angeles on October 7th. Brad Richards leads the Rangers in scoring with 8-points. No other player has accumulated more than 5-points this season. The Rangers are a very good 18-8 in their last 26-games versus an opponent that scored 2-goals or less in their previous game.

Enough of the Losing Already

The Detroit Red Wings enter tonight’s game having lost 3 in a row for their backers' NHL picks. The last of those defeats came at home on Wednesday when they were trounced by Ottawa 6-1. This will be the final game of a 3-game home stand that began on Monday with a 1-0 overtime shootout loss versus the San Jose Sharks. In the loss versus Ottawa Jonas Gustavvson received the start in goal but was pulled early in the 3rd period after allowing 3 goals on 20 shots on net. At the time of this writing Jimmy Howard is listed as the starter in goal tonight. Howard is 3-5 on the season with a 2.60 GAA and a .914 save percentage. Detroit is just 2-12 in their last 14-games when playing on exactly 2-days of rest. Detroit has gone over the total just 3 of their last 19 after allowing 5-goals or more in their previous game.

Final Analysis

Both of these clubs have struggled to score goals this season. The Red Wins have scored just 3-goals combined during their current 3-game losing streak. The Rangers difficulties in that area have been already been elaborated on in detail.  However, my professional intuition tells me the Rangers will want to establish some momentum before their much anticipated home opener on Monday. I’m calling for the huge upset tonight.

NHL Super System

Any road team coming off a road loss versus a division opponent, versus a team coming off a loss by 4-goals or more against a division opponent is 24-9 (72.7%) on the money line since the start of the 1996-1997 year.

Free Pick: Rangers +190 over the Red Wings.
