The biggest markets in the NHL get together on Monday night as the Kings host the Rangers. What numbers have the sportsbooks placed on offer for our sports betting pleasures?

According to current NHL betting odds the Kings are a -150 money line favorite and the posted total is 5.0. The Kings are -1.5 (+205) on the puck-line. The last time these 2 clubs met was on 10/7/2011 when the Kings defeated the Rangers in overtime in a game played at Stockholm, Sweden. Who seems to be the most most promising sports betting pick in this match?

New York-New York!

The head coaching debut of Alain Vigneault for the New York Rangers was a disappointing one. The “Blue Shirts” were a 4-1 loser at Phoenix. On a positive note the lone Rangers goal of the game was scored by defensemen Marc Staal. It was Staal’s first game back since being hit in the eye with a puck this past March 5th versus Philadelphia. The Rangers may get an unexpected boost as their captain Ryan Callahan has been practicing and may return to the lineup tonight. Callahan has been recovering from offseason shoulder surgery and is ahead of schedule in the healing process. A good indication that Callahan will return is the fact that the Rangers sent J.T. Miller to their American League affiliate in Hartford on Saturday.

Kings of their Castle

The Kings were virtually unbeatable at home a season ago. During the 2013 strike-shortened regular season and the playoffs the Kings were a combined 26-5 on the money line at the Staples Center. They have arguably the best group of defensemen in the Western Conference, and Jonathan Quick may be the best goaltender in the world right now. Quick was pulled in the Kings 5-3 loss at Winnipeg on Friday night. I look for him to rebound with a strong performance and be up to the stiff challenge the Rangers will provide. This is a veteran club that doesn’t get rattled and plays with immense confidence. They won the Stanley Cup in 2012 and advanced to the Western Conference Finals in 2013 before being eliminated by the eventual Stanley Cup champion Chicago Blackhawks. Los Angeles opened the season with a 3-2 shootout win at Minnesota. This will be the Kings home opener.

Final Analysis

The Kings are just too tough at home. Believe it or not, this may be one of the cheapest prices you will catch them at home all season. The Rangers are still talented but are currently in transition with a new coaching staff in place. They will contend in the Eastern Conference but this will be a very difficult spot for them to overcome. The Kings will play with an extra bit of intensity in their home opener, so consider them for your hockey picks.
