The New York
Rangers Can Win Because…
They’ve got the Flyers number. They’ve now won 14 of the last 19 meetings between the teams and the strategy is pretty much the same: drag the Flyers into a sloppy, conservative style of contest and don’t give their offensive skaters much room to work with. The Rangers have done that three times in this series now in each of their wins. As long as they don’t give the Flyers power play extra chances, the Rangers should get the job done in Game 6 again.
They’ve been the better team in five-on-five play, outscoring the Flyers 12-6 at even strength. The Flyers need their special teams but if the Rangers play disciplined and don’t give them any freebies, they’ll win Game 6.
Flyers Can Win Because…
They’ll respond, just as they have each time they’ve faced a deficit in this series. The Rangers don’t have a killer instinct and have taken their foot off the gas three straight times that they’ve had a series lead.
There were some positives that came out of the Game 5 loss to the Rangers. The good news is Claude Giroux scored his first goal of the series and they desperately need him to get going. That’s likely to fire him up a bit. They also managed to cut down their penalties to just three, which was their lowest number in the series. After taking 12 penalties and allowing three power play markers in Games 1 and 2, the Flyers have killed off all 11 penalties in the last three games.
If they can play disciplined in Game 6 and bring the passion they displayed in Games 2 and 4, they’ll extend this series to a deciding game.
Outlook & Pick
This just has the looks of a series that will go seven games. The Flyers and Rangers have been going back-and-forth, alternating wins for five straight games now. Look for that to continue one more time. Take the Flyers with your NHL picks as they’ll force a Game 7.
