The New York
Rangers Can Win Because…
They’ve outplayed the Flyers for three straight games. Let’s face it: had the Rangers not blown a 2-0 lead in Game 2, which is extremely uncharacteristic for a good defensive team like them, they’d be up 3-0 in this series looking to close it out. They own the Flyers. This is no accident. They’ve now won 13 of the last 17 meetings between the teams.
The Rangers are so successful because they are able to stymie the Flyers and drag them into low-scoring affairs. Philadelphia has scored just 17 goals in the last 11 meetings between the teams. That works great for the conservative Rangers and that’s why they’ve been able to take advantage.
Flyers Can Win Because…
They’ll make adjustments. The Flyers are at home and should be able to dictate the pace as they did in Game 2, which means more hitting, a faster paced game and more scoring chances. Just as they had between Games 1 and 2, there are two days off as Game 4 isn’t until Friday. That means the Flyers will have extra time to make adjustments and get the win.
The Flyers should also get Steve Mason back between the pipes for Game 4 as he was able to return at the end of Game 3 when Ray Emery was pulled. Emery has been OK in this series but has still given up 10 goals in three games. The Flyers will play better with their No. 1 netminder back. Mason was 20-12-2 at home this season with a 2.39 GAA.
Outlook & Pick
The Flyers should rebound in Game 4, as their backs are against the wall and they know they can’t afford to go down 3-1. With two more games still to come in New York, expect the Flyers to take advantage of the home ice and pull through for our NHL picks. With Mason back in the net, they’ll find a way to get it done.
