According to NHL betting odds, Washington is a -145 money line favorite and the total is 5.5. The last time these two teams met was in Game 7 of last year’s Eastern Conference Quarterfinals at Washington which was won by the Rangers 5-1.

There’s no beating around the bush when these two clubs get together. They just don’t like each other! Both of these teams are off to disappointing starts and will look to garner some momentum with a win tonight. The home team has won 6 of the last 7 games between these 2 teams. How should we play our sports picks for this game?

Homesick and Road Weary

The Rangers have had the unenviable task of starting the season with their first 9-games on the road, while Madison Square Garden goes through a 1-billion dollar renovation project. The road hasn’t been very kind as they’ve come away with just a single win in 5-games, and enter tonight on a 3-game losing streak. During that 3-game funk the “Blue Shirts” have been outscored by a whopping 20 to 5. Veteran backup Marty Biron received the start in the last game and had to be pulled shortly after allowing 4-goals on just 17 shots. Biron was later demoted to the Rangers AHL affiliate in Hartford. Henrik Lundquist hasn’t been sharp to start the season posting a lofty 4.21 GAA and a terrible .887 save percentage. Dating back to last season the Rangers are now 1-7 in their last 8 road games and 1-7 in the last 8 after allowing 5-goals or more.

Spared of Capital Punishment

The Capitals were able to finally give their fans something to cheer about on Tuesday night posting a 4-2 home win over the Edmonton Oilers. The win snapped a 3-game losing streak and the Capitals are 1-2 on this current 5-game home stand. Much like the Rangers the Capitals goaltending and play in their own zone has been very shoddy to start the year. Washington is 27th in the NHL allowing 3.7 goals per game. Braden Holtby has struggled in goal posting a lofty 3.56 GAA and a less than stellar .886 save percentage in 4 starts. On a positive note, the Capitals are 1st in the NHL on the power plays converting a whopping 36.4% of their chances. Alexander Ovechkin is off to a terrific start scoring 6-goals and adding 3-assists in the first 6-games of the year. Dating back to last season Washington is 12-4 in their last 16 at home.

Final Analysis

In a battle of struggling clubs it amounts to fading the worst of two evils. Despite entering tonight playing on 3 days rest, the Rangers have been on the road for over 2 weeks now, which will eventually take its toll sooner rather than later. Besides that until Henrik Lundquist regains his form and confidence this team isn’t going to get a red cent of my money wagered on them. The Capitals will be out to atone for last season’s playoff elimination at the hands of tonight’s opponent, and are riding a bit of momentum coming off a win. I have a very small lean toward the Washington Capitals for my NHL picks in this game.
