The Washington Capitals drew first blood in their best-of-seven matchup with the New York Rangers and they looked pretty darn good in the process.

NHL Betting: Rangers vs Capitals Picks

A second straight win might lock up this series for them – believe it or not. All the pressure is on the Rangers and their high-priced roster to deliver whereas the Caps are merely on cruise control.

The New York Rangers can win because…

This is going to be a back-and-forth series. Some experts that make sports picks are already writing off the Rangers but let’s remember that in last year’s playoff series between the teams, the two sides alternated wins and losses all seven games.

Lunqvist had a bad outing in Game 1 and it’s unlikely that happens again. If the Rangers can get their special teams going and get some help from the offense, they’ll be just fine.

The Washington Capitals can win because…

They whipped the Rangers in Game 1. While 3-1 might look like a close result, between these two teams, that’s a blowout. The Caps scored three goals in the second period and the Rangers never threatened them from there.

What’s scary is that the Rangers key edge in this series is supposed to be goaltender Henrik Lundqvist, but he looked awful in Game 1. He left in two softies and Braden Holtby completely outplayed him.

The Caps are just a red-hot, confident team. They are in the rare spot of being the favorite but all of the pressure is on the Rangers to deliver. The Caps should continue to cruise here.

Outlook & Pick

Truth be told, I like the Caps again here. They are hot, confident and loose while the Rangers lack an identity, scoring and self-esteem. However, I’ll take the under instead as Lundqvist won’t have two bad games in a row. He could steal a win for New York here but in any case, I see this being a low-scoring game for our NHL picks.
