The Colorado Avalanche's host the Nashville Predators tonight at the Pepsi Center. Which team holds the best value for this matchup?

The Colorado Avalanche’s goaltending has been among the best in the NHL while the Nashville Predators have recently struggled in that realm. Since losing starting goaltender Pekka Rinne (hip), they’ve been allowing more goals and that’s a problem considering they don’t have the offense to keep up. On Wednesday, we’ll find out if they can keep the Avs under wraps and give themselves a shot to win.

The Nashville Predators can win because…

They’ve been surprisingly competitive on the road recently. People who’ve been adding the Preds to their NHL picks recently have cashed in throughout a number of their recent road games. The Preds are coming off a win in Los Angeles where they were a big dog and they are now 3-1-1 in their last five road games. The difference has been scoring as they tallied just three markers in their first two road games but have averaged 2.6 goals per game in their last five. If they can get three goals in this one, they’ll have a good shot of winning.

The Colorado Avalanche can win because…

Winning is all they do these days. Bettors have been making plenty money on their sports picks betting the Avs as they won 12 of their 13 games so far this season. Their goaltending/defense continue to be phenomenal as they’ve allowed two goals or less in every game aside from their 4-2 loss to Detroit. That means that in their 12 wins, they’ve given up just 15 goals. That’s bad news for the Predators, who don’t exactly have the most explosive offense in the NHL. Going on the road to face a team that’s playing airtight defensive hockey figures to be too tall an order for the Preds.

Outlook & Pick

Just 13 games into the season, the Avs already have a +23 goal differential. To put that into perspective, only two NHL teams had a better mark than that in the entire lockout-shortened season. Does that mean I want to lay -200 with them on the NHL odds? Not really. Instead, I’ll go with the over. Yes, the Avs have been a good defensive team and the Preds struggle to score at times, but with Carter Hutton in net, the Preds have found themselves in higher-scoring affairs. Only one of his six starts has seen less than five goals.
