The Toronto Maple Leafs are running the gauntlet this week. After playing a tough, physical Philadelphia Flyers team on Saturday, they then visiting the Anaheim Ducks on Monday. They’ll face San Jose on Tuesday before visiting Los Angeles, Washington and Detroit before next Tuesday.

The Toronto Maple Leafs Can Win Because…

The Sharks are an up and down team. Sure, they’re going to make the playoffs but if you’re a bettor, how can you trust them from night to night. Just take a look at the last week: they’ve topped teams like Pittsburgh, Montreal and New Jersey, yet cost you a pretty penny if you bet them with your sports picks against Buffalo and Carolina (at home).

If those non-playoff teams can upend the Sharks, so can the Maple Leafs.

The San Jose Sharks Can Win Because…

They’re hot again. This seems to be a streaky team but right now, it’s all signs go. They enter Tuesday’s game on a two-game winning streak but have won six of their last eight overall. They are even more dominant at home where they have won four of five while compiling a 24-4-4 record at the Shark Tank this season.

They’re offense is cooking, which is great if you’re thinking of adding them to your NHL picks. They’ve averaged 3.9 goals per game over their last seven, which figures to be a problem for the defensive-challenged Maple Leafs.

Outlook & Pick

You have to lay a lot with the Sharks here on the NHL odds, which makes it too rich for my blood. Instead, I’ll lay the puck line as the Sharks have won by two or more in each of their last four wins. I think this will be too tight of a spot for Toronto, who is in a back-to-back situation and playing their third game in four nights.

Pick: Sharks -1.5 at 5Dimes
