The Stanley Cup Champion Chicago Blackhawks’ season debut was dampened with a loss to the Rangers but they are looking to rebound. Let’s peruse the NHL odds and see which side looks poised to cash.

Hawks Begin Season with a Thud
Chicago’s opening night puck drop was delayed after the team and the crowd celebrated last season’s Stanley Cup victory with a crispy new banner hoisted high above the United Center amongst a laser light show replete with synchronized music reverberating through the stadium. Highlights of last season and presentations worked the crowd into a joyful frenzy anticipating that this wave of electricity would carry over into the first game of the regular season.

But the joy didn’t last long as the New York Rangers silenced the crowd 1:43 into the first period when Oscar Lindberg beat Corey Crawford to take an early lead. Artemi Panerin would knot the game at one apiece but the Rangers struck twice more in the period to lead 3-1 at intermission. Teuvo Teravainen would draw Chicago closer with a lamp-lighter in the second but a scoreless third period resulted in a disappointing 3-2 loss for the defending champs.

Islanders’ Fresh Start
The Nassau Coliseum is no longer the crumbling home of the New York Islanders as they move into their posh new digs at the state-of-the-art Barclays Center in Brooklyn. The Islanders are coming off a surprisingly successful 2014season that saw the perennial cellar dwellers win 47 games and notch 25 of those wins at home which was tied for third most in the Eastern Conference. However the momentum did not carry fully as they lost a heartbreaking Game 7 to the Washington Capitals in the postseason. The Islanders dwelled on the loss throughout the summer as captain John Tavares offered the following:

"You could really feel the disappointment throughout our group over the summer. It definitely adds to pushing ourselves to get back here. We realize how hard it is just to get where we got last year."

The Islanders’ core group is back with Kyle Okposo, Ryan Strome, Anders Lee, Josh Bailey as well as backstop Jaroslav Halak taking the ice for New York. Head coach Jack Capuano is in his sixth season and eager to finish what his team started last season.

NHL Pick
The Islanders will have a celebration of their own tonight as they prepare to christen the Barclays Center for their first ever game in Brooklyn. This is a team that has been on the rise and made noise last season with a thrilling series against the Capitals. The Blackhawks are certainly not pleased with the way their season started Wednesday night with the NHL odds makers installing Chicago as -135 betting favorites over the Rangers.

The last time the teams met in New York, at the old Nassau Coliseum, it was December 13th when New York claimed a 3-2 victory. If you chose to add the Islanders in your NHL picks when they met Chicago in New York over the past two seasons you would have cashed on both occasions and returned 2.7 units to your bankroll. The question here is what will the teams do tonight so early in the season? I believe the Islanders have a sound defensive corps and will build upon what they did last season while the Blackhawks looked lethargic in their game two nights ago and now must travel from the Midwest to the East Coast against a team eager to prove that they belong as among the best in the Eastern Conference.
