The Pittsburgh Penguins and Carolina Hurricanes will meet on Tuesday in a matchup of two teams heading in opposite directions. Where should we look for value fo rour NHL picks?

The Pens are the only team in the East that have clinched a playoff spot while the Hurricanes have stopped having those thoughts since they’ve lost 12 of their last 13.

Record: 113-134 (-1533)

The Pittsburgh Penguins can win because…

Beating the Hurricanes is child’s play. After all, we are talking about a team that has won just once in the last month.

The Pens should cruise even without a slew of their regulars. The Hurricanes played on Monday and were smoked 6-2 by Boston. This will be their third game in four nights and their sixth in nine days in April.

Pittsburgh is the best team in the East. They shouldn’t have any problems here.

The Carolina Hurricanes can win because…

…can they? The Hurricanes have completely forgot how to win and some are wondering whether head coach Kirk Muller should even have a job. The Canes were 15-9-1 earlier this season and appeared to be the clear-cut favorite to win the Southeast Division. Now they are just two points better than the worst team in the Eastern Conference and five points better than the worst team in the NHL.

The only reasoning for betting the Canes in this spot is if you believe the Pens injuries are too much to overcome. Sidney Crosby is out, as is James Neal and Kris Letang. This team is deep but they are shorthanded and that could cost them on the road.

Outlook & Pick

The options for our sports picks in this game are the under or the Penguins on the puck line. Given how the Hurricanes have played recently, there’s no way to play anything else.

That being said, Carolina has scored just seven goals during this five-game losing streak. With the Pens missing a bunch of firepower, I’ll take the under with my NHL picks instead of risking the juice on the NHL odds.
