Our NHL betting expert examines tonight’s game between the Maple Leafs/Rangers. This is a must read for NHL bettors, and it also includes a free pick on the total.

Home Opener at the World’s Most Famous Arena
The New York Rangers will host the Maple Leafs on Sunday at Madison Square Garden in downtown Manhattan with a scheduled start time of 7:05 PM ET. This will be the Rangers home opener. According to NHL odds, the Rangers are a -170 money line favorite, and the posted total is 5.0. The Rangers are -1.5 (+185) and the Maple Leafs +1.5 (-220) on the puck line. The Rangers have won 6 of the last 8 meetings between these clubs. These teams have seen just 3 of their last 11 meetings stay under the total, and only 2 of the last 10 at Madison Square Garden have played on the low side of the number.

Dismal Start for the Leafs
The Maple Leafs season has began with a disappointing 0-2 start, and each of those games was played on home ice. They were a 4-3 loser to Montreal on Wednesday, and then last night fell 5-2 at the hands of the Pittsburgh Penguins. The Leafs finished last season by going 3-11 in their last 14 road games, and have gone a combined 36-53 on the road the last 2-seasons. Toronto have also seen 7 of their last 10 on the road go over the total. Toronto went 3-10 in their last 13 overall last season when playing with no rest, and that included 1-6 in the last 7 on the road. They went over the total in 10 of their last 14-games when playing with no rest.

Rangers Look for Return to Glory
The New York Rangers reached the Stanley Cup Finals a season ago in their first year under head coach Alain Vigneault. Expectations are running rampant heading into this 2014-2015 campaign and rightfully so. They’re off to a 1-1 start so far after winning their opener on Thursday 3-2 at St. Louis, and then losing 5-2 last night 5-2 at Columbus. The Rangers went 9-3 in their last 12 regular season games a year ago when playing with no rest. The Rangers were 9-9 last season when playing their 3rd game in 4-days.

Final Analysis
These teams have a recent history of playing high scoring games, and I look for more of the same tonight. Toronto has gone over the total in each of their first 2-games with 7-goals apiece being scored in both contests. The Rangers first 2-games have averaged 6 goals per outing.

Free NHL Pick: Maple Leafs/Rangers to go over the total of 5.0 at 5Dimes
