The start of the 2014-15 NHL season is upon us. Puck drop is tonight with four games. Make sure you get all of your futures bets in as it’s last call. Right now, we’ll take a look at some NHL picks for tonight’s games.

Montreal Canadiens vs. Toronto Maple Leafs
NHL odds list the Maple Leafs -110. Although the Maple Leafs opened as a slight chalk in some places, SBR's live NHL odds currently has the game at a PICK. This will be the fifth consecutive season that these two teams have met in their opening contest. The Leafs have won the last four.

The Canadiens are the better team overall but I like Toronto in this spot. I expect them to be fired up in what amounts to a game where they can measure themselves up against one of the better teams in the East. The crowd will be fired up and that should give the Leafs the slight edge.

NHL Pick: Leafs -110

Philadelphia Flyers vs. Boston Bruins
NHL odds list the Bruins -180. The Bruins have had the Philadelphia Flyers number recently, winning all three meetings last season while scoring at least four goals in every contest. They’ve also won four of the last five meetings overall.

Although I think the Boston Bruins win, the moneyline price is a bit steep here, so the options are either Flyers or Bruins puck line. I like neither of those. I’ll lean with the over as the Bruins shouldn’t have much probably scoring on the Flyers while the Flyers offense should chip in enough for us to get over the number.

NHL Pick: Over 5.5

San Jose Sharks vs. Los Angeles Kings
NHL odds list the Kings -140. The San Jose Sharks will be looking for revenge in this one after they blew a 3-0 first round series lead against the Los Angeles Kings in the playoffs last season. Revenge might be tough as the Kings have won nine of the last 10 times they’ve hosted the Sharks. The Sharks were also only 7-13 last season when on the road with a total of five or less, so it’s tough to like them in this spot – even if motivation is on their site.

I’ll go with the over instead. Five is a low number and both offenses should be able to do just enough to at least get us the push.

NHL Pick: Over 5

Vancouver Canucks vs. Calgary Flames
NHL odds list the Canucks -115. I think this line is wrong here. I see the Flames as being a team on the rise and the Canucks being a team on the downside. The Flames finished last season on a 19-13-0 run and while they are young, I expect that good run to carry over into this season. As for the Canucks, they are a team in transition with a new head coach and lots of new faces.

The Canucks have dominated this series, winning nine of the last 10 meetings, but I like Calgary in this spot. This trend reflects how the teams were over the last five years or so. A lot has changed since then.

NHL Pick: Flames -105
