NHL Picks: Oilers vs. Predators

It’s a quiet night in the NHL with just two games on the card. We’re going to focus in on one of them as the Edmonton Oilers visit the Nashville Predators. Both teams are hanging around the bottom of their respective divisions and could use a win to boost their positioning.

The Edmonton Oilers can win because…

They’ve been playing relatively well of late. Although the Oilers lost on Monday at home to the Chicago Blackhawks, it was just their first loss in four games. Their offense has been clicking as they’ve tallied 16 goals in their last four. That offense tends to play better on the road than it does at home, so that should give them a boost. They score just 2.09 goals per game at home, which is the third-worst average in the NHL. On the road, they average 2.93, which is fifth-best. Combined with the fact that the Preds could be fatigued after playing last night in Columbus and Monday against Phoenix, and you have a couple of reasons to add the Oilers to your sports picks.

The Nashville Predators can win because…

The Oilers still suck. Yes, they did have a three-game winning streak last week but those who make NHL picks should dig a little deeper. They beat the Calgary Flames, Columbus Blue Jackets and Florida Panthers. Those three teams are all on Edmonton’s level or worse, so the Oilers haven’t really accomplished much. The 5-1 home loss to Chicago indicates that not much has changed.

The Preds are playing well these days as they’ve won six of seven. They’re also at home where they are 6-3-1 on the season, which compares quite favorably to the Oilers horrendous 4-8-2 road record.

Outlook & Pick

Take a look at the goaltending situation in this one. The Preds played on Tuesday and if Mark Mazanec is in net again, then the Preds are worth a play laying just -132 in the NHL odds. If Mazanec gets the night off since it’s a back-to-back, take the over as the Oilers allow a lot of goals and Preds netminder Carter Hutton has a 3.39 GAA and .891 save percentage.
