It appears that we have a 2 man race to take down the NHL MVP between Carey Price of the Montreal Canadiens and Alex Ovechkin of the Washington Capitals. At 2/5 odds, Price appears to be a sure thing, or is he? Take a look at what we think as we provide you with our betting pick.
Odds To Win the Hart Memorial MVP Trophy
Carey Price -2/5
Alex Ovechkin 5/2
Sidney Crosby 9/2
John Tavares -12/1
Okay folks, the NHL betting odds are pretty self-explanatory and I will explain to you why and who will win the MVP Award.
MVP Players Come From Great Teams
Very rarely will you see an MVP come from a last place team or a team that's in the middle of the pack. Occasionally, it does happen, but this year's MVP is clear cut.
Let's take it from the bottom. John Tavares is a flatout beast. He will see MVP awards in his future if he stay's healthy. In his two previous seasons, he was injured and this season, Tavares has progressively gotten better. That said, an 80 point season on a team that's likely to be 4th or 5th in the Eastern Conference when the playoffs start, simply won't cut it. The odds display this and if you take Tavares, you will be losing money.
Sid the Kid
When Sidney Crosby was a teenager, he was touted as the next Wayne Gretzky and Mario Lemieux. While Crosby has had a sensational career with 844 points in 619 games, injuries have slown him down and we're talking about this season. Crosby is all hype. He is a very good hockey player. In my opinion, John Tavares has been a better player than Sid the Kid this season, but off of his name, the odds create Crosby as a 9/2 shot. I can guarantee you that he won't win this award unless the fix is in.
The great Ovechkin has two things working against him. He's not on a top level team and his assists are down. Nobody doubt's Ovechkin's ability as a goal scorer as he's about to eclipse the 50 goal mark for the 6th time in his career.
This is a player that has had 100 points or more in 4 seasons. While Sidney Crosby is more of a set up man, Ovechkin is a pure goal scorer. Nobody in the NHL comes anywhere near his 360 shots on goal. That said, you need to play the complete game and there's one player on this list that has and it hasn't been Alex.
2/5 are convincing odds; nearly automatic. This is for good reason as Price has defended a team in the Montreal Canadiens, who lead Eastern Conference Atlantic Division with 100 points. Montreal is 1st in the NHL in goals against at 2.2 and it's all thanks to the goaltending of Carey Price.
For the season, Price is 40-15-5 with a 1.88 GAA and sizzling .937 SV%. It just doesn't get any better than that and no offense to Max Pacioretty, Carey Price is the MVP of his team and the league. The Canadiens have a legitimate shot at the Stanley Cup with a netminder in Price, who is playing out of this world, which is why I'll be siding by him for my NHL picks.
