We have three picks and previews for you below as well as an individual game preview of the Toronto Maple Leafs-Nashville Predators article in its own piece.
Record: 10-17 (-369)
Colorado Avalanche @ Boston Bruins
I’m a little surprised that the Colorado Avalanche’s goaltending and defense aren’t getting more respect. Sure, a lot of handicappers and experts who make sports picks assumed that the Avs would be a bad team after finishing with the worst record in the West last season. However, this has always been a talented offensive team, they’ve always had a good young goaltender in Semyon Varlamov and they were really just a quality blue line away from being competitive. Head coach Patrick Roy has come in, has sparked Varlamov and the team is playing great defensively. They’ve allowed just three goals in three games.
Boston is also a defensive team that plays low-scoring affairs at home. That leads me to believe the under is the best play on the NHL odds here.
NHL Pick: Under 5.5 at WillHill
Winnipeg Jets at Minnesota Wild
I haven’t been particularly impressed with the Minnesota Wild so far. They enter the season with some high expectations and some pressure – especially head coach Mike Yeo – but we haven’t seen the results as of yet. They’ve lost all three of their games to start the season – two of which were at home – and they just don’t look like they are any better than they were a year ago.
On the flip side, the Winnipeg Jets have looked good as they’ve won two of three. They’re not a very reliable team to bet on the road but as an underdog in this situation, it’s worth the price of admission. They should be well-rested for this game as they haven’t played since Sunday. I’ll add them to my NHL picks and expected a quality effort out of them.
NHL Pick: Wild at Bovada
Phoenix Coyotes at Detroit Red Wings
The Phoenix Coyotes have not been competitive on the road this season and we’ll bank on that extending for at least one more game. While the Coyotes won their only home game (4-1 over the New York Rangers), they have lost their two road games by a combined score of 10-1. On Thursday, they have to travel to Joe Louis Arena, which is typically a tough place to play. The Coyotes have lost six straight in Detroit.
The Red Wings should have an edge in net as Jimmy Howard plays great against the Coyotes. For his career (including the playoffs), he’s 16-4-2 against them.
I don’t want to lay the juice with the Red Wings as I hardly ever lay over -140 with my free picks at any point. It’s early in the season, so anything can happen, which is why I’m even less inclined to lay the juice. However, I do think the Red Wings will get the job done, so I’ll lay the puck line and hope they can pull off a two-goal win.
