Battle in the Pacific on Sunday Night
The Kings (4-3) and Oilers (3-5) square off on Sunday night in a Pacific Division encounter. The opening faceoff at Rexall Place in Edmonton is slated for 10:35 PM ET. According to current NHL betting odds at Heritage, Los Angeles is a -137 money line favorite, and the total is 5.0. Los Angeles won three of their five meetings against Edmonton a season ago, and those games went 4-0-1 over the total.
Heating up after Slow Start
The Los Angeles Kings began the season by losing their first three games, and were outscored by a combined 12-2. Even more concerning was the fact that all of the contests were played at home. Since that time, they’ve reeled off four wins in a row, and outscored their opponents during this current winning streak by a combined 11-3. Kings goaltender Jonathan Quick has been sizzling hot recently. Quick endured a horrible start which saw him go 0-3 with a poor .861 save percentage. During his previous four starts, Quick has an excellent .965 save percentage. In his last outing, Quick stopped all 40 Carolina Hurricanes shots on goal, and recorded his first shutout of the season during a 3-0 home win.
It’s a bit difficult to comprehend when calling a team improved after a less than stellar 3-5 start. However, considering the path that Edmonton has been on over the past decade, they’ve passed my personal eye test in that regard. Don’t misunderstand me, they have a ways to go still before Oilers fans can start ordering playoff tickets, but early returns indicate they’re a lot closer than a year ago. It didn’t appear that way at first, losing their first four games before rebounding to win three in a row. Then on Friday the win streak came to an end during a humbling 7-4 home loss to Washington. On a very encouraging note, prized 18 year old rookie Connor McDavid is off to a great start. McDavid has scored five goals and added three assists in the Oiler first eight games. Cameron Talbot is expected to be in goal tonight, and he’s 2-3 in five starts with a solid .918 save percentage.
NHL Money Line Angle
Any team (Kings) playing in the first half of the season, coming off a home shutout win, and has a winning record, versus an opponent (Oilers) with a losing record, resulted in that team going 44-6 (88%) during the past five seasons. This clearly backs the road favorite in tonight’s game, and I’m on board with that handicapping logic for one of my NHL picks today.
