Free NHL picks for the Wednesday night matchup between the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Philadelphia Flyers. What are the current odds on offer, and who is posting the best value?

The Philadelphia Flyers open their season at home on Wednesday night versus the Toronto Maple Leafs. Face off is set for 7:35 PM ET. According to current NHL odds the Flyers are a favorite of -140 on the money line with a total of 5.5.

No Rest for the Weary

The Leafs will be playing with no rest after opening their season last night in Montreal. Since the start of the 2010-2011 year Toronto has gone over the total in 12 of 15-games in the month of October as a road underdog. Last season the Leafs went just 2-5 on the road when playing with no rest. Going back to 3/17/2011 Toronto is a dismal 6-14 in the last 20 on the road when playing with no rest. In those game last season on the road with no rest they finished the year by going over the total in 5 of their last 6 with an average combined 7.2 goals per game scored. The Toronto Maple Leafs finished last season by going 16-7 ATS in their last 23-games on the puck-line as a road underdog.

The Broad Street Busts

The Flyers come off a disappointing season that saw thewm fail to make the playoffs. Philadelphia was a very ordinary 10-7 as a home favorite a season ago. They went under the total in 7 of their last 9 home games when the total was 5.5 or more. The Flyers saw all 3 games versus the Leafs go over the total last season as well as 6 of the last 7 games overall surpassing the number in this series. Philadelphia was a dismal 3-15 ATS on the puck-line last season as a home favorite.

Final Analysis

Based on the history between these two clubs it would be fairly safe to assume we will see a bit of a wide open game on Wednesday night. Both teams have a couple of lines apiece with ample scoring ability. As I alluded to earlier in this preview the Leafs as a road underdog in addition to playing with no rest have been profitable when wagering on the over. That’s the route we will go with our NHL picks here.
