What are we to make of the Philadelphia Flyers? Just when we thought they’d turned a corner with wins over the Pittsburgh Penguins and New York Islanders, they lay an egg at home to the hapless Florida Panthers. Now the NHL odds makers want us to lay juice with them when they host Toronto on Monday, which sounds like a dicey proposition.
Let's breakdown this matchup and decide where the best value lies for our NHL picks tonight.
Record: 54-60 (-425)
The Toronto Maple Leafs can win because…
They’ve already topped Philadelphia once this season. On February 11th, they hosted the Flyers and crushed them in a 5-2 result.
The problem with the Flyers is that they are wildly inconsistent. Do you really want to lay -135 with them knowing that they just flopped at home two games ago to Florida?
Toronto has been steady all season long – particularly on the road – and it makes more sense to invest in them as a dog than Philadelphia as a favorite.
The Philadelphia Flyers can win because…
They’ve turned the ship around. The Flyers have won three of four and the loss to Florida can be forgiven. After all, that was their first game home after a six-game road trip and they were a little flat. In the three wins, they’ve notched 18 goals, which is what we’re used to seeing from them.
The Toronto Maple Leafs have had trouble scoring goals recently so if the Flyers make this a shootout of any type, they are going to roll. The Leafs haven’t scored more than three goals in any of their last six games while averaging just 2.0 per contest. If the Flyers offense is truly back in business, they’ll pick up this win.
Outlook & Pick
The Leafs have lost two of three and aren’t scoring many goals these days. Meanwhile, Philadelphia appears – and I tentatively say ‘appears’ – to have knocked off the rust and found their scoring touch. That being the case, I’ll lay the juice with the Flyers at the cheapest possible price I can find.
