The Toronto Maple Leafs and Phoenix Coyotes both appear to through their rough patches. They’ve both had their fair share of troubles in December and early January, but now enter Monday’s game on modest winning streaks.

The Toronto Maple Leafs Can Win Because….

The Coyotes are just a gong show these days. Sure, they have back-to-back one-goal home wins over the struggling Vancouver Canucks and the mediocre Calgary Flames. Even with those wins, they’ve still dropped 12 of their last 17 games.

The Maple Leafs are playing much better these days as they’ve won four straight games. Their offense is cooking as they’ve scored at least three goals in each of those wins (16 in total). As for the Coyotes, they’re giving up three goals per game over their last six and are averaging just 2.11 goals per game themselves this month (23rd in the NHL). That’s why the Leafs are the better choice for your NHL picks here.

The Phoenix Coyotes Can Win Because….

They’ve won two straight and are starting to right the ship. It seems like the light bulb went on for Mike Smith after he was named to Team Canada’s lineup for the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi. He’s allowed just four goals in his last three outings, which is probably about as good of a three-game stretch as he’s had all year.

If he’s going to keep this up, the Coyotes will have a good shot to win on Monday.

Outlook & Pick

Expect a good crowd for this game in Phoenix…because Toronto is in town. The Coyotes don’t draw a good attendance these days but expect to see a lot of blue and white in the audience with the Leafs visiting. Combined with the fact that Toronto has been playing well recently and that you’re getting them as a huge road dog on the NHL odds, they’re the better choice for your NHL picks in this spot.
