It's only appropriate that the first puck to drop in the 2013-2014 NHL season comes in the game between Toronto Maple Leafs and the Montreal Canadians. Find out where we have decided to place our NHL picks in this matchup.

This is hands down the longest and most heated NHL rivalry bar none. The face off is scheduled for 7:05 PM ET at the Molson Center in Montreal. According to current NHL odds Montreal is -135 and Toronto +115 on the money line. The total in this game is 5.5.

Take a look at our NHL Picks of the Day article for more free plays.

Get the Bad Taste out of your Mouth

The first order of business for the Maple Leafs is to get rid of the bad taste in their mouths from how last season ended. The Leafs had a 2-goal lead with less than 2 minutes to go in Game 7 of the Eastern Conference quarterfinals versus Boston. They proceeded to allow Boston to not only tie the game but also win it in overtime. Then they painstakingly had to watch the Bruins advance all the way to the Stanley Cup Finals. The sooner the season begins the better it will be for the whole organization to remove that from their memory banks. The Leafs will be strong in goal with their incumbent #1 James Reimer and the addition of Jonathan Bernier who came over in a trade from the Los Angeles Kings.

Go Habs Go!

The most successful franchise in NHL history gets their season under way versus their most fierce rival. The Canadians have lost 5 of their last 6 home games versus the Leafs. This year’s Montreal team is expected to be one of the top teams in the Eastern Conference. The Canadians success will hinge largely on the play of Carey Price in goal. Price had an off year last year and was particularly ineffective down the stretch of the regular season and into the playoffs. It’ll be imperative he returns to form if the Canadians hope to advance to the Stanley Cup Finals in the Eastern Conference.

Final Analysis

The Montreal Canadians will be out to turn around the recent hex they’ve had at one versus Toronto. With emotions high in their home opener. I look for Canadians to come out and make an early statement in this one, helping us cash in our NHL picks

Free Selection: Montreal -135 on the money line over Toronto.
