No better way to start a season than with these two California rivals. Money is flowing in on the Sharks but I'll tell you why the 'dog' is the right NHL pick along with bankroll management tips.

2016-17 NHL Record: 0-0 0% Even

Before we get into the Los Angeles Kings and the San Jose Sharks match-up, it's always important to talk about how to manage your bankroll to start a new season. I know the word 'discipline' seems like a cliché at times but it's the only way you'll find success. Too many people are focused on the action and not enough on the management of the action. The idea is to grow your bankroll throughout the season in a slow and intelligent manner. I've heard too many bettors talk about how they lost all of their money a week into the season, mostly because they decided to put a little more on a game than their bankroll allowed.

So how much should we bet on games? When you read my write-ups you'll notice that I put a unit value on my play. It's not a level of confidence, it's more of a reflection of where my bankroll is in the process of growth. For me, a unit is 1%; for others, it could mean 10K. That's a strategy you'll have to determine while keeping in mind that, if you're going to follow me, then there will be times when we will put 10 units on a game, so If 1 unit means 10K....you get the picture. Don't extend yourself too far.

Lastly, keep your bankrolls separate. Don't use football money to bet hockey.

With that mini-lesson behind us let's get to tonight's release on NHL Picks.

This is a game of value in what has become a huge rivalry in the Pacific Division. I'm always a little leery jumping on a Stanley Cup participant early especially when they'll be witnessing their Western Conference Championship being raised before tonight's game.

While the Sharks focus on their accomplishment it will be the Kings whose blood will be boiling with the anticipation of payback.  Let's not forget, it was the Sharks who easily bounced the Kings out of the first round of last season's playoffs.

Don't forget that the Sharks were not a very good home team last season losing 20 of 38 with three overtime losses.  In fact, the only game the Kings won in their series was at the 'Shark Tank'.

Sharks goaltender Martin Jones will begin his sophomore season after an amazing postseason run. I still need to see Jones elevate his game in the regular season. If his save percentage can consistently creep up in the 92% range, I'll view him the same as I did in the postseason.  Two separate entities. Don't get them confused.

From a trend perspective, the road team in this series has won eight of their last 10 meetings.
