Don’t look now but the Edmonton Oilers are playing some of their best hockey of the season. Considering that this team has just .283 winning percentage on the season, the fact that they’ve won three of their last five games is quite impressive. On Friday, they’re a big home dog on the NHL betting lines to the red-hot Dallas Stars.
The Dallas Stars Can Win Because…
They’re in the midst of their best stretch of the season. While it’s too little, too late for the Stars, they’re playing fantastic right now. They’ve won four straight and nine of their last 11 games. They’ve been an unstoppable force on offense while their goaltending has been as steady as it has been in a long time, which is probably why the're currently listed as shor favorites on the NHL betting odds.
Kari Lehtonen is normally an inconsistent netminder but he’s stellar in the month of March. So far this month, he’s 8-1-0 with a 2.07 GAA and a .924 save percentage. He should be able to pad those numbers against an Oilers team that is one of the worst in the NHL.
As for the Stars offense, they have been one of the highest-scoring teams this season and they’ve been even better of late. They’ve scored 12 goals in their last three outings and have averaged 3.3 over their last 10. Edmonton’s goaltending continues to be a problem as they’ve allowed 39 goals in their last seven games, which boils down to 5.6 per contest. The Stars should have a feast here, which is why you might want to take them.
The Edmonton Oilers Can Win Because…
They’ve actually been quite competent of late. They have gone 3-1-1 in their last five games while beating the Toronto Maple Leafs, Philadelphia Flyers and Colorado Avalanche. While those teams aren’t world beaters, just seeing the Oilers be competitive is a good sign.
Their offense has been playing well as they’re scoring 3.09 goals per game this month. In case you’re keeping track, that’s the fifth-best number in the NHL in March and is better than the Stars 2.92 average this month.
If the Oilers can succeed into turning this contest into a shootout, they should have a chance to sneak out another win. They’ve been cashing in big-time as a dog recently and could present another opportunity on Friday.
I would like to take a shot with the Oilers but the truth is that their wins over the Maple Leafs, Flyers and Avalanche aren’t that credible – especially since all of those teams are much worse on the road. On the flip side, Dallas has actually been better on the road than at home this season. However, the juice is super high here, so I’m going to recommend the over in this spot instead of the moneyline for our NHL picks. Both teams are playing really well at the offensive end, so over is what makes sense here.
