The Florida Panthers bombed the Philadelphia Flyers 7-1 in their season-opening contest. Will anything change when the two sides meet again on Monday?

Momentum for these two teams is at opposite ends of the spectrum right now and much of that has to do with the fact that the Flyers are 0-2 to start the season. Not only are they 0-2 but they’ve also 10 goals so far through two games, which means they’ve posted a 5.00 GA/G so far. That’s tied for the worst in the NHL. The Flyers were so discombobulated in the 7-1 loss to the Panthers that they felt the need to have a players-only meeting. This type of thing happens when the players want to get the house in order but they never happen this early in the season.

As for Florida, they have to be feeling good about themselves. They scored seven on the Flyers just a couple of days ago and put for a fairly solid team effort. Now they have the opportunity to do it again and start off 2-0.

Projected Starting Goalies
What we know right now is that Steve Mason is probable along with Roberto Luongo.

Mason has been a mess for the Flyers so far. He was so-so in the team’s regular-season opener at Tampa Bay but he still allowed three goals on 32 shots, which boils down to a .906 save percentage. He was much worse in the team’s second contest when he lasted just 6:46 of ice time after giving up four goals on eight shots. That’s a pathetic .500 save percentage. Although Ray Emery replaced him, he still gave up three goals on 19 shots for a paltry .864 save percentage. Clearly, the defense is not helping these goaltenders out right now and neither are playing well so far.

As for Luongo, he’s played just one game but looked strong against the Flyers. He faced 38 shots and allowed just one goal. It’s fairly clear that the Panthers have the edge in net in this matchup. For his career, he has a reasonable .919 save percentage against Philadelphia.

What’s The Pick?
The NHL odds opened Philly -125 at Pinnacle and originally climbed up to start. However, it’s hard to lay the juice in this spot. Yes, they’re a talented team at the offensive end but they’re not a complete team. On top of that, the Panthers are the better team between the pipes. Even offensively, the Flyers have just three goals through two games.

While I expect a much better effort out of the Flyers after their players-only meeting – especially since this will be their home opener – I can’t lay the juice here. Instead, I’ll take a shot with the over. I expect the Flyers offense to wake up and I expect their defense to be just as poor. We’re getting plus-money on the over 5.5 at Pinnacle, so that’s what I’m going to go with for my NHL picks.

Pick: Over 5.5 at Pinnacle
