Who would have thought that a quarter through the 2013 season the Edmonton Oilers would have more points than the defending Stanley Cup champions? That’s exactly the case as the Oilers host the Los Angeles Kings on Tuesday.
The Oil Can isn’t getting much respect from the NHL odds makers tonight as they are a +110 home dog in this situation.
Record: 48-52 (-322)
The Los Angeles Kings Can Win Because…
Both of their goalies play well against Edmonton. If it’s Jonathan Quick, he’s 5-0-2 against them with a 1.41 GAA. If it’s Jonathan Bernier, he’s won his two starts against them while posting a GAA of 1.00.
The Oilers are struggling these days. They’ve lost six of their last eight and prior to their six-goal output on Saturday – against the lousy Colorado Avalanche – they had been averaging just 2.2 goals per game. The Kings haven’t allowed more than three goals in five straight games so the Oilers will have a tough time doing much in this game.
The Edmonton Oilers Can Win Because…
The Kings stink on the road. They have won just three of nine road games this season and two of their last six. This is a game that Edmonton can win.
What business does Los Angeles have being a road favorite in this spot? They have less points than Edmonton, they aren’t playing noticeably better than the Oilers right now and they aren’t scoring much. Is that the type of team you want to lay -130 with on the road? The Oil Can looks like a good home dog in this spot.
Outlook & Pick
The Oilers went eight straight games without topping three goals prior to their six-goal outburst in their latest contest. Meanwhile, the Kings entered the week as just one of two NHL teams that has yet to score 30 goals. Neither team is scoring much, so the under is the best choice for our sports picks as it is the only play that makes sense here.
