Free NHL picks for the Firday night Western Conference battle between the Los Angeles Kings and the Winnipeg Jets. Let our hockey odds overview help you decide where to place your sports picks.

The Los Angeles Kings and Winnipeg Jets both got their seasons started with respectable come-from-behind road victories in their season openers. Now the two Western Conference foes will square off on Friday night in Winnipeg as the cut the ribbon on their home opener.

Make sure you also check out our daily picks article where we run through three other games and provide some predictions. For now, here’s a preview of the Kings-Jets showdown.

The Los Angeles Kings can win because…

They just proved they can go on the road and get a win. The Kings were a dicey bet on the road all of last season but they started the 2013-14 season on a positive note by going into Minnesota and earning a 3-2 shootout win. Sometimes a quick turnaround isn’t a good thing but in this spot, their confidence will carry over.

For the Kings, offense is their key to success because the defense is clearly going to be there. At the other end, Jonathan Quick stopped 27 of 29 shots, carried the Kings in the shootout and now they are 1-0.

The difference between the Kings and the Jets is going to be goaltending. While both teams have relatively similar scoring – sometimes the offenses shows up, sometimes they don’t – the real difference is Quick. He gives the Kings a huge edge in net in this game and that’s why they are the better play with your sports picks

The Winnipeg Jets can win because…

They are a different team. They told us all offseason that they were going to be improved and we saw it in the opener. They were a big underdog on the NHL odds in Edmonton but the Jets showed up and proved to be quite resilient. They trailed three separate times in the game and still found a way to win.

The Jets offense does look much improved as Michael Frolik had a pair of goals, Mark Scheifele found the back of the net and rookie Jacob Trouba recorded a goal and an assist. If the Jets can score five goals without Blake Wheeler, Andrew Ladd, Evander Kane or Devin Setoguchi getting on the score sheet, that’s a really good sign.

In this spot, the Jets catch the Kings in a back-to-back situation on the road. They’ll be rested and they’ll be fired up for their first home game.

Outlook & Pick

This is a tough game to pick but I don’t think the Jets win in Edmonton was a fluke. I think this team is improved. That being the case, I’ll take a shot with them on my NHL picks.

The Kings are in a back-to-back road situation and we’re talking about a team that was just 8-16 away from home last season. Also, my sentiment on their Thursday win in Minnesota was that they squeaked by. They only mustered 18 shots in the game. Take the Jets in this spot to get the win and start off the season 2-0-0.
