St Louis are ahead thanks very much to Alexander Steen's overtime goal, but the Kings will be expecting to get back on track in the second game of the series.
In my humble opinion…
Your Humble Handicapper doesn't think that the defending champions will go gently and I can't foresee them being two-nil down after two games, therefore I expect the Kings to reign on Thursday night.
Meet who in ST Louis?
Still the Blues have plenty to be excited about and their forward Andy MacDonald summed it up when he said, "I think we had the adrenaline going and were excited being our home opener in the playoffs and a lot to prove."
That's as maybe but the NHL odds now have the Kings at +1500 to win the Stanley Cup and St Louis at +1800.
They also have this series going the distance of seven games at +187. What's more LA coming out on top is at +160 and St Louis came out on top is at -163.
I think betting on a seven game series is very wise as the Blues look considerably keener in the first game and are certainly the sort of team that can win having won 12 of their last 15 matches to earn the fourth seed in the West's conference. Not to mention the fact that they have home ice advantage against the Kings.
The Kings will begrudge the Blues this home ice advantage as they finished just one point behind them.
Don't forget the Kings have experience of winning Stanley cups and they have sufficient veterans and old-timers in their squad to pick up the youngsters after losing the first game.
When it comes to placing my NHL picks, I think that this is going to be an exciting game and feature plenty of passion coming from the Kings meaning that the Blues will have their work cut out trying to keep on top of them.
However I do think that it's another close game and smart money in my pocket is going on again having a small number of goals scored in it. I'm going to say away from the game ending tied to the third period though, but I don't think LA will let this game slip through their fingers.
