New York Islanders @ New York Rangers
According to NHL betting odds the Rangers are a -170 money line home favorite and the posted total is 5.5. The road team has won the last 5 meetings between these two clubs. These teams have seen 13 of their last 19 meetings go over the total.
Nice Rebound for Isles
The New York Islanders rebounded nicely from a loss at Philadelphia on Saturday. They revenged the defeat in a 4-3 home overtime shootout win over the Flyers yesterday afternoon. They were able to overcome a 3-1 deficit entering the 3rd period to tie the game at 3, and subsequently won it in the overtime shootout session. The win for the Islanders was their 9th in the last 12-games. They’ve also gone over the total in 5 of their last 6, and 7 of the last 9. The Isles have gone under the total in just 7 of their last 27 road games overall. Tonight will be the 3rd game in the last 4-days for the Islanders. They’ve gone a successful 4-1 versus the money line in the last 5-games when playing their 3rd game in 4-days. However, they’re an anemic 24-59 in their last 83-games when playing with no rest. The Islanders are also a red-hot 8-2 in their last 10 road games versus the money line, and are a perfect 7-0 in their last 7 versus an opponent with a winning money line record for the year.
Rangers are Sizzling Hot
The Rangers enter tonight’s Metropolitan Division clash with their long time rival having won 6 of the last 7, and 11 of their last 15-games overall. A huge plus has been the play of Henrik Lundquist in goal. The Rangers star had an erratic 1st half of the season, but he’s really played lights out of late. Lundquist is 5-1 in his last 6 starts, allowing just 8-goals combined, and compiling a brilliant .958 save percentage. The Rangers have failed to go over the total in any of their last 7-games. This will be the Rangers 3rd game in the last 4-days, and their 4th in the last 6. The Rangers have gone a very profitable 9-3 in their last 12 when playing their 4th game in the last 6-days. They’ve also gone over the total just once in their last 5 when playing their 3rd game in 4-days. After struggling for the better part in the 1st half of the season at home, the “Blue Shirts” have really turned it around of late. They’ve now won 4 of their last 5 at Madison Square Garden, as well as earning at least 1-point in 7 of the last 8, and 11 of their last 13 on home ice.
After handicapping this contest, and looking through all the data carefully, I was unable to uncover any true value NHL pick with neither the money line, nor the total. This is one I’m personally going to pass on. However, if you cornered me for an opinion I do have a small lean toward the road underdog in this spot.
