NHL Picks: Islanders vs. Penguins

The New York Islanders are red-hot (by their standards) as they enter Sunday’s contest as winners of three of their last four. So, do we play the Moneyline or the Total for this free NHL pick?

While they do have some momentum, the truth is that each of those wins came at home but now they have to head out on the road for a three-game road trip.

Here’s a look at the NHL odds for this matchup:

Record: 79-90 (-602)

The New York Islanders can win because…

They are playing well right now. They’ve won three of four and are scoring goals at a healthy rate. They are fresh off a 5-2 win over Washington Saturday night and have now tallied 19 goals in their last five games.

The Isles should be pretty confident about their visit to Pittsburgh. They’ve already ventured there once and came away with a 4-2 win. The Isles have also won three of their last four on the road. That should give Penguins bettors pause considering the odds makers want you to lay -187 to take the favorite.

The Pittsburgh Penguins can win because…

They’re rolling right now. Pittsburg has won four straight and really has their mojo going. Their offense has produced 21 goals in their last four games as they have been tearing up everything in their paths. The Isles will have to be concerned with that offense considering starting goaltender Evgeni Nabokov has a goals-against average of 2.92.

Even though the Isles won in Pittsburgh earlier this season, the Pens have still won five of the last seven meetings they’ve hosted. That trend should continue on Sunday.

Outlook & Pick

The Isles should have a reasonable shot to win this game even if the odds don’t indicate that. They are coming in with plenty of confidence and they have played well on the road recently and would be a solid NHL pick.

However, I’ll take the over as the two teams are putting plenty of pucks in the net these days. Four of the last five meetings have gone over and that should be five in six after Sunday.
