The New York Islanders and Calgary Flames are two of the worst teams in the NHL. There’s no playoffs in sight for either side as they merely play out their string of games for 2014.

The New York Islanders Can Win Because…

The Flames are one of the worst teams in the NHL and are laying -150. It’s a rare time that Calgary’s even been favored on the NHL odds this season, let alone laying this much. Are they really worth the price? The Islanders are bad but they still have more than the 55 points that Calgary does.

One thing that gets overlooked with the Isles is that they’re a decent road team. They are a pitiful 9-24 at home but they’re 15-16-0 on the road. They have a coin-flip chance to win in this one, so take the value with your NHL picks.

The Calgary Flames Can Win Because…

They’re playing well right now. The Flames have won two of their last three games and are playing pretty well from a defensive perspective. They’ve allowed two goals or less in seven of their last eight games while giving up a total of 13 in the process.

As for the Islanders, they’ve waived the white flag. Their horrible season got worse when they downsized even more so at the trade deadline. Thomas Vanek is gone, captain John Tavares is out and their head coach and general manager are about to be fired. Going on the road to beat a Flames team that’s won six of seven at home is too tall of an order.

Outlook & Pick

The Flames have won six of their last nine against teams with a losing record. As for the Islanders, they’re on a horrible downtrend and in a back-to-back situation after playing in Edmonton last night. The Flames are the ideal choice for your NHL picks here but with the price being a bit too high on them, take the under instead.

Pick: Under 5.5 at Bododog
