The New York Rangers scored an easy win in Game 1 of their Eastern Conference Quarter-Finals but don’t expect the whole series to go this way. The Philadelphia Flyers could be offering some decent value on the NHL odds on Sunday after having a couple of days to regroup.

The Philadelphia Flyers Can Win Because…
They’ll be more disciplined in Game 2. The Flyers were playing the Rangers very tightly in Game 1 as it was tied 1-1 midway through the third period. Then the Flyers parade to the penalty box kicked in and they ended up getting blown out. The Flyers took four penalties (10 total minutes) in the final 14 minutes of action and the Rangers ended up with a 4-1 win. That simply can’t happen again.

Expect the Flyers to shoot a lot more in Game 2 as they only had 15 shots on net in Game 2. We’re talking about a team that averaged 30.4 shots per game in the regular season, so this was clearly an aberration. They’ll get back on track on Sunday.

The New York Rangers Can Win Because…
They’re able to dictate the pace. It’s not an accident that the Flyers only had 15 shots in Game 1. The Rangers are a defensive-minded team and would rather keep the games tight and low-scoring. They dictated the pace in Game 1 and dragged the Flyers into their style of play. Philadelphia would rather a free-flowing high-scoring affair. It’s pretty clear that that’s not going to happen – at least in New York.

The Rangers have now won eight straight home meetings between the teams and 11 of the last 14 overall. They know how to stymie the Flyers – as evidenced in Game 1 – and they’ll do more of the same in Game 2.

Outlook & Pick
These two teams are very evenly matched and the Flyers might be worth a look for your NHL picks as a big road dog. However, I think the better play is the under. Expect another low-scoring affair as the Rangers dictate the pace at home.

Pick: Under 5 at Bodog
