The Pittsburgh Penguins host their arch rival the Philadelphia Flyers on Wednesday at the Consol Energy Center. The odds are out; which side are we on?

According to NHL betting odds Pittsburgh is a -240 money line home favorite and the posted total is 5.5. The Flyers have lost 4 of the last 5 versus the Penguins. Ironically they’ve won 8 of the last 11 played in Pittsburgh.

Broad Street Bullied

It wasn’t that long ago the Flyers were one of the most successful and feared franchises in the NHL. After failing to qualify for the Stanley Cup Playoff last season, the Flyers are off to a lackluster 6-11 start in the 2013-2014 campaign. However, on a positive note, they’ve won their last 2-games, and both in impressive fashion. They were a 4-2 winner at home last Saturday versus Edmonton, and then last night defeated the Ottawa Senators on the road 5-0. Steve Mason recorded his first shutout of the season in last night’s win stopping all 24 shots on goal. Mason has been one of the few bright spots in the early going posting a stellar 2.15 GAA and .930 save percentage in 13 starts. Even more encouraging for the Flyers was the fact they’ve scored 9-goals over the last 2-games. Prior to the current 2-game plethora of goal scoring, they scored 2-goals or less in 14 of their first 15-games.

Home Sweet Home

The Penguins return from a 3-game road in which they went 1-2, including dropping their last 2.  In those 2 losses they were stifled offensively losing 5-1 versus Rangers and 2-1 against St. Louis in their most recent game last Saturday. Pittsburgh has been a very profitable 7-2 at home this season, and an excellent 49-16 in their last 65-games at the Energy Consol Center. The Penguins have also gone 9-1 in their last 10-games versus an opponent that scored 5-goals or more in their previous game.

Final Analysis

The Flyers will most likely have Ray Emery in goal tonight. Emery has struggled in 4-starts with his new club as evidenced by a substandard .879 save percentage and lofty 3.13 GAA. In addition the Flyers have gained confidence offensively in their last 2-games. The probability of the Penguins being stymied offensively 3-games in a row are low. I like this one to play on the high side. Go with the over for your NHL picks.

NHL Pick: Flyers/Penguins to go over the total of 5.5
