The Coyotes host the Flames on Saturday at the Jobing.com Arena in Phoenix, Arizona with the opening face-off slated for 10:05 PM ET.

Calgary Flames vs. Phoenix Coyotes

According to NHL betting odds the Coyotes are a -205 money line home favorite and the posted total is 5.5. The home team has won the last 7-games in this series, and Phoenix has defeated Calgary in 8 of their last 9 at home. Calgary is 6th in the Pacific Division, and is 14 the overall in the Western Conference. Phoenix is 4th in the Pacific and is 9th overall in the West.

Returning Home

The Coyotes return home from a 4-game in 6-day road trip that saw them go 2-2. They're currently just 2-points behind the Dallas Stars for the final playoff position in the Western Conference. The Coyotes will be a weary bunch this evening as this will be their 11th game in the last 17-days. Phoenix has gone over the total in their last 7-games after playing their previous 4 on the road. They've gone under the total in just 10 of 33 home games this season, and only 7 of the 25 when the total was 5.5.

NHL Picks: Saturday Picks of the Day

Not Putting out the Flames

The Calgary Flames have all but been eliminated from playoff contention for quite some time now. Despite not having a lot to play for it hasn't deterred them from giving an all out effort.  Last night they rallied from a late 3-1 deficit in the 3rd period at Dallas, and ultimately came away with a 4-3 overtime shootout win. The win was their 11th in the last 17-games. The Flames have gone over the total in their last 3, and have gone under in just 1 of his last 6. They've also gone over the total in 11 of their last 16-games when playing with no rest.

Attempting to Change the Culture

Tonight will be the 3rd game in the last 4-days, and the 6th in the last 9-days for Calgary. Their win last night was just their 14th in the last 52 road games versus the money line. Calgary has also gone a dismal 22-49 in the last 71 on no rest, and 20-41 in the last 61 when playing their 3rd game in 4-days.

Final Analysis

Both of these teams have played a rigorous schedule since resuming play after the Olympic break. My professional experience has been when these types of scenarios arise this late in the year, more times than not it turns into a lackluster low scoring affair.

Free Pick: Calgary/Phoenix to go under of the total of 5.
